Feedback

The main concept in control system is the notion of feedback. Machines are human made devices that are used to achieve very specific tasks with great accuracy. Humans, on the other hand, are flexible and can take on great variety of responsibilities.

Almost all machines have feedback in them, one way or another, to ensure proper completion of their tasks. However, we, as humans, perform tasks that are vague in nature. Very often you don't get much feedback from others. This results in the task not being accomplished in the most efficient manner (if not, unsuccessful). Therefore, I believe it is important for me to receive feedback regarding this blog.

I would appreciate any form of suggestions from you (the readers) - may it be bad or good. You can leave your comments or suggestion on this page. If you would like to talk more, let me know in the comments below and we will figure a way to better contact each other (to guard against spammer).

  1. Why is Control Theory considered a theory?

  2. Good question. I am just saying this based on my experience. When we (people in control) are working on control, most of us proposed some sort of control algorithm on paper (and hence theory) and verify it by simulation. However, only a handful of people will bring their theory to the next level by implementing it on some application. Therefore, control has been traditionally considered theoretical.

You can actually see the difference between control and other field of engineering easily. You can search a paper in IEEE Industrial Electronic and compared it against a paper in IEEE Automatic Control. You get a flavor as to why people call it control theory.

  3. I applied in National University of Singapore(Research Masters), McGill U (Research Masters) and Imperial College London (Taught Masters). Ihave received the offer of admission from ICL but not from others yet and have to reply by the end of April. Any advice? Should I go for Imperial??

    1. Depends what you want. Imperial College London is probably more prestigious than McGill. You should phone up the universities too and tell them your situation. You can probably write to your potential supervisors to ask them about it. Funding would be a major issue so think careful.

Nonetheless, congratulations on getting accepted to ICL!

I was wondering about job opportunities after the completion of my masters at Imperial. You are right funding is an issue at Imperial. The course I have been admitted for is MSc Control Systems (Coursework Masters). - See more at: http://controlgradstudy.blogspot.in/p/feedback.html?showComment=1398878248412#sthash.iiXC7Du4.dpuf

  5. I am not too certain about the job economy in Britain. I am currently working in the States and I can tell you that Control is a big thing in the States. I am not too sure about other places. Canada does not have a control industry as vibrant as the States. Nonetheless, being able to land your feet in Canada gets you one step closer to the States.
